"Europa! Europa returns for a fifth year showcasing the immense cultural diversity and rich arsenal of filmmaking talent from the European continent. This year, we bring European cinema to new corners of our region as we expand to Brisbane, Hobart and Auckland.
Our odyssey begins on opening night with the Australian Premiere of Mona Fastvold’s The Testament of Ann Lee, which stars Amanda Seyfried as the founder of the religious Shaker Movement.
We are thrilled to bring films by some of cinema’s modern masters, including Albert Serra with Afternoons of Solitude, László Nemes with Orphan, Lav Diaz with Magellan, Gianfranco Rosi with Below the Clouds, and Quentin Dupieux with The Piano Accident.
We profile some of Europe’s most famous figures in films like Chopin, a Sonata in Paris, about the composer’s most volatile and productive period, and Primavera, which features another titan of classical music, Vivaldi, and feature popular stars like Almodóvar veteran Carmen Maura in the life-affirming Calle Málaga and Willem Dafoe in the sleek thriller The Birthday Party.
Oscar-nominated director Agnieszka Holland’s Franz provides a kaleidoscopic biopic of the life of Kafka, and Diane Kury’s The One I Loved showcases the scandalous romance between French cultural icons Simone Signoret and Yves Montand.
We have exciting new voices from Eastern and Central Europe, including the vibrant slacker comedy Rolling Papers from Estonia, the delightful and culturally rich Hungarian Wedding, and The Southern Chronicles, Lithuania’s biggest ever box office hit.
Our two retrospective strands spotlight the prolific collaboration between Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni and his muse Monica Vitti, and the ineffably charming later works of one of the French New Wave’s founding fathers with Éric Rohmer’s Tales of the Four Seasons.
Join us as we traverse Europe in search of cinematic greatness – we trust you will find it."
– Spiro Economopoulos, Artistic Director
