Australian Premiere

"Captures all the giddy excitement and harsh awakenings of a teenage girl on the cusp of maturity." -  Screen International

Ukraine, 1990. Bananarama’s ‘Venus’ dominates the airwaves and it’s one year before the Soviet Union collapses. Kira, 17 years old, is stepping out of her adolescence into adulthood at the same moment as Ukraine steps out of Soviet control and into the unknown. When she discovers her father has a mistress, her cloistered world begins to fall apart. While a blossoming relationship with a more experienced man catapults her into adulthood Kira, like Ukraine, will try all kinds of things for the first time – funny, dangerous, rebellious – as every teenager does.

Director Tonia Noyabrova’s semi-autobiographical second feature authentically captures the giddy rush, the awkward uncertainty and the harsh reality of impending adulthood with an astute eye for detail. While the potent setting captures the bittersweet blend of the personal and the political.
