Maspalomas

Maspalomas

Australian & New Zealand Premiere

“Superb Basque drama bursting with humanism, empathy and candid sex … a very deep movie about self-acceptance, forgiving, compassion, tolerance, solidarity and finding comfort in the most unlikely of places.” – Dirty Movies

Ever since he came out as gay at the age of 50, leaving his wife and daughter back home in San Sebastián, septuagenarian Vicente has been living it up in the sun-drenched resort town of Maspalomas in the Canary Islands After recently splitting up with his partner Esteban, Vicente is making the most of his newly single life when he parties too hard one night, suffering a stroke and ending up in a coma. Upon waking up, Vicente finds that he’s been moved to a care home by his estranged daughter. To make matters worse, he finds himself back “in the closet”, since he hasn’t told anyone at the home about his sexual identity.

This sunny, sexy and deeply humanist film spotlights a subject still burdened by many presumptions and taboos: ageing sexuality. With a light-hearted and empathetic approach, it’s a tender and timely reminder of how communication and respect can bridge gaps – between politics, generations, sexualities, genders and differences of all kinds.
