Australian & New Zealand Premiere
“An unsettling, intimate, and quietly devastating film.” – The Cinema Nook
Magalie is ready for a break. For years she’s been making viral social media content in which she endures all kinds of outrageously painful stunts – being electrocuted, hit by a high-speed baseball bat, struck by a falling washing machine. She was born with congenital insensitivity, meaning she’s unable to feel physical pain, and her videos have made her a social media star. After a particularly bad accident involving a piano, she retreats to a luxurious mountain chalet with her personal assistant for some R&R. But when a journalist who knows her secret starts blackmailing her, Magalie’s world starts to crumble around her.
Notorious provocateur of French cinema Quentin Dupieux delivers a satire of the social media age in the vein of Kristoffer Borgli’s Sick of Myself and Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness. With the brilliant Adèle Exarchopoulos (Zero Fucks Given, Europa 2022) up for anything in the lead role, Dupieux aims his signature absurdist humour at the machinery of online fame and the culture that enables its amorality.
